The four-episode OVA will stream live on the video site Nico Nico Douga, followed by a hi-def release on August 24th.
In celebration of 15 years of the hard-traveling scarred anime hero's adventures, animation studio Aniplex is streaming the newest OVA on August 20th, with a Blu-ray release the following Tuesday. The 1999 OVA originally got a release here via the now-defunct ADV Films, but will be released directly through Aniplex from a couple of stateside retailers including RightStuf.com. The release comes not long after the announcement earlier this year of a new anime and the start of production on the live-action adaptation. No word on if the new release will include new dubs and subs.
Here's the official synopsis of the classic miniseries:
The amazing prequel to the hit TV series Rorouni Kenshin is collected in the OVA series Rurouni Kenshin: Trust and Betrayal. Set in nineteenth century Japan, journey into Kenshin’s past as a young orphan where he learns his fighting skills from the great swordsman Hiko. Witness his beginnings from an idealistic youth to a cold-hearted assassin in a land torn by warfare and rebellion. Amidst all the killing and betrayal, Kenshin’s world is thrown into further confusion by the arrival of a mysterious woman named Tomoe. Are Tomoe’s true intentions to help Kenshin, or does she hide a secret that can destroy everything Kenshin has come to depend on. Follow them on their journey as Kenshin and Tomoe try to escape from the past and start their life anew. Learn where Kenshin received his scar and discover Kenshin’s balance between trust and betrayal.
Here's a message from the series producer, Ai Abe:
The OVA release will be followed by the September 21st release of the two-episodeReflection OVA on Blu-ray and then the movie on October 26th. You can find out more details--including the local streaming times--on the Aniplex page for Rurouni Kenshin.
Rourouni Kenshin: Trust and Betrayal will be available on Blu-ray on August 24th.
